Young Artists' Competition
Symphony Hamilton is dedicated to nurturing young musical talents through a number of venues and opportunities. One of these is the Young Artists' Competition. This year again the orchestra will hold the competition for young musicians, giving them a chance to win a bursary and play as a soloist with the Symphony orchestra. Interested? Young Artists' Competition 2010 [Applications closed May 14, 2010]
Purpose
To provide an opportunity for young area musicians to perform as a soloist with orchestra.
Prize
The winner of each category will receive $200 and perform as a soloist in our 2010-2011 season.
Categories
The competition is open to orchestral instruments (brass, woodwinds, and strings), harp and voice.
- Junior - Instrumental only - age limit 15 or under as of May 31, 2010
- Senior - Instrumental only - age limit 23 or under as of May 31, 2010
- Senior - Voice only - age limit 26 or under as of May 31, 2010
Past winners cannot re-apply in the same category. Past junior category winners must wait until the third year after winning and must be eligible for the senior category before re-applying.
Music Selection Requirements
The contestant must select one or more movements of a concerto, or a one-movement composition originally composed for their instrument or voice and orchestra. The orchestral accompaniment must be readily available in print (subject to approval by the symphony librarian), and the total performance time should not exceed 15 minutes in length.
Eligibility Requirements
- A contestant must be a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident of Canada, or a non-Canadian citizen who has studied with a Canadian teacher in Canada for at least 2 years.
- A contestant must reside or have resided in Southwestern Ontario, or have studied in Southwestern Ontario.
- Contestants should be recommended by their teachers.
Application Fee
There is a non-refundable application fee of $30.00.
Audition Procedure
Contestants must submit an application form and registration fee along with a recording of themselves playing the selected music with piano accompaniment. Recordings will not be identified when audited by the judges. The competition will take place on Saturday June 12, 2010 from 9:30am to 12 noon
at the Hamilton Mennonite Church - 143 Lower Horning Road Hamilton
Recordings will only be returned if a stamped self-addressed envelope is included with the application.
Deadline
Completed application form and fee plus recording must be in our office by Friday, May 14, 2010.
